ST. GEORGE, Utah - Utah State softball lost its Saturday games at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, losing to No. 12 Washington, 1-0, and 7-6 to Brigham Young.
Utah State senior pitcher Kristin Hommel (0-5) worked a complete game, and allowed just one run on six hits. She struck out four and walked two. The Aggies were held to just three hits in the first game. Stephanie Vaserhely was 2-3, while Heather Curtis posted USU's other hit. Washington scored its run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch and an error.
In the second game, BYU scored five runs in the third inning, and the Aggies came back from a 5-1 defecit to lead entering the bottom of the seventh, 6-5. BYU's brooke Cadiente hit a home run, scoring Oli Keohohou, who reached on a base on balls. Freshman Lindsay Janssen (1-7) worked seven complete innings, and allowed seven earned runs on five hits. She struck out eight. Utah State's Marnie Andrews was 2-2 with a triple, two runs scored and two driven in. Vaserhely was 2-4 with an RBI in the second game of the day.
USU faces UNLV in the final game of the tournament Sunday at noon.
