LONG BEACH, Calif. - Utah State's softball team opened Big West Conference action with two losses to Long Beach State Saturday. The Aggies suffered identical shutouts in the doubleheader against the 49ers, losing 2-0 in both games. USU is now 3-22 overall and 0-2 in the BWC, while LBSU moves to 26-13 and 3-1 on the year.
In the first game, the Aggies were held to two hits. Both junior Danielle Rodriguez and right fielder Marnie Andrews each recorded a hit. Aggie pitcher Kristin Hommel (1-8) allowed one run on one hit, struck out six and walked six in six innings of work. The game was scoreless until designated player Darcy Brown drove in both runs for the 49ers with a two-out triple in the sixth inning.
In the second game, USU's Xochitl Ramirez (1-4) allowed four hits and two runs in five innings. Freshman pitcher Lindsay Janssen relieved Ramirez in the sixth, and allowed just one hit. Rodriguez accounted for two of the Aggies' three hits in the second game, including a double, while catcher Breanne Smith recorded USU's third hit. 49er Lindsey Knoff pitched a complete game, striking out five and walking none.
The Aggies conclude their three-game series with the 49ers on Sunday at noon.
