Softball Falls To Long Beach State In 11 Innings

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Utah State softball dropped to 3-23 overall and 0-3 in the Big West Conference Sunday, losing 2-1 at Long Beach State (27-13, 5-1) in an 11-inning game. The win gave the 49ers a series sweep over USU.

The USU pitching staff gave up six hits on the day. Kristin Hommel allowed one run on four hits in 6.1 innings. She struck out five and allowed five bases on balls, while Lindsay Janssen worked four innings in relief and gave up one unearned run on two hits. In the bottom of the 11th, LBSU's Pantina Thanatharn had a leadoff single, advanced to third on Danielle Rodriguez' two-base error, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Breanne Smith hit her third home run of the year, giving the Aggies their only run of the three-game series. Smith was 2-3 on the day with a walk. Heather Curtis and Rodriguez had USU's other two hits in the game.

The Aggies travel to Provo for a doubleheader at Brigham Young on Wednesday at 2 p.m. USU's 2002 home-opening series is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 against No. 7 Cal State Fullerton (30-9, 6-0). The Aggies and Titans play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and a single game Saturday at noon.
