PROVO, Utah - Utah State softball (3-25, 0-3) lost two games to Brigham Young (21-11) in Provo Wednesday. BYU took the first game, 7-1, and defeated USU in eight innings, 9-8, in the second game. The Aggies haven't defeated BYU in the teams' last eight meetings, dating to 2000 and moving the series record to 22-13 in USU's favor.
In the first game, the Aggies scored first, as Stephanie Vaserhely drove in Danielle Rodriguez on a double in the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, USU gave up three runs, as BYU posted three hits, including Lauren Watson drove in three on a triple. BYU scored four more runs in the sixth inning to seal the game. Vaserhely and Marnie Andrews were both 2-3 on the day, while Rodriguez was 2-4 with a double and run scored. Pitcher Xochitl Ramirez (1-5) allowed seven runs, six earned, on four hits in five innings. She struck out two. Lindsay Janssen threw one inning in relief, allowing two hits and striking out one.
The eight-inning loss in the second game marks USU's third extra-innings game in its last six contests. The Aggies posted five runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Catcher Amanda Carlson was 2-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Aimee C. Johnson was 2-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. Pitcher Kristin Hommel (1-9) took the loss, working a complete game, and allowing five earned runs on nine hits. She walked eight and struck out four.
USU's 2002 home-opening series is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 against No. 7 Cal State Fullerton (30-9, 6-0) at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field. The Aggies and Titans play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and a single game Saturday at noon.
