LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball was swept by Brigham Young Thursday, losing the first game, 7-3, and the second, 3-2. The Aggies are 4-35 overall, while BYU moves to 26-16 on the season.
In the first game, USU posted its three runs on eight hits, including Heather Curtis' 2-2 day. Curtis had a walk and a run scored. Breanne Smith was 0-1 with a run batted in on two sacrifices, while Casey Smith hit her second triple of the season, driving in one. Pitcher Kristin Hommel (2-14) allowed seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits in 6.2 innings pitched. She walked seven and struck out four.
Entering the seventh inning of the second game, the Aggies held the lead, but allowed two runs on a hit and an error in the top of the inning, giving BYU the lead. BYU's Megan Johnson singled, and USU intentionally walked Oli Keohohou. With two outs in the inning, Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Keohohou advanced to third. The next batter, Elizabeth Boydston, reached on an error by USU pitcher Lindsay Janssen that scored Keohohou, putting BYU up 3-2.
Janssen (1-16) gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits. She walked three and struck out two in a complete game. Second baseman Marcie Neff was 2-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Marnie Andrews and B. Smith were both 1-3 for the Aggies.
The Cougars swept the season series, 5-0, winning 7-6 at the Red Desert Classic on March 2, and taking a doubleheader in Provo on March 27, 7-1 and 9-8 in extra innings in the second game. Utah State travels to Sacramento State for a three-game Big West series Saturday and Sunday, with games both days beginning at 1 p.m.
