Softball Falls to Utah, 6-2

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball (3-29) lost to Utah (13-28), 6-2, Tuesday. It was the first of four scheduled meetings between the teams this season. The win marks Utah's fourth consecutive win over the Aggies, dating to the 2000 season.

Tuesday, Utah posted a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Melissa Stahnke's seventh home run of the season. Utah scored three more in the third. The Aggies' two runs came in the sixth, as Aimee C. Johnson scored on an RBI double by Casey Smith. Kara Foster moved Smith to third on a single, and Smith scored as Foster was picked off at second for the first out of the inning.

USU pitcher Kristin Hommel (1-12) worked a complete game, and allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits and four walks. She struck out six. Foster was 2-3 on the day, while Smith posted her second double of the year, going 1-3. Third baseman Stephanie Vasarhely was also 1-3 in the game.

The Aggies resume Big West Conference play Friday, April 5 at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field, as they host No. 18 Pacific in a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday, USU and Pacific conclude the three-game set with a single game at noon.
