RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Utah State softball (11-44, 7-16) split its Friday doubleheader at UC Riverside (15-43, 5-17), winning the first game, 6-2. The Aggies dropped the second game to UCR, 9-2. Utah State catcher Breanne Smith was 4-7 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and two batted in.

In the Aggies' 6-2 win, USU scored four runs in the second and one each in the third and the seventh. USU's four runs in the second inning were unearned, as the teams committed a combined five errors in the game.

The Aggies posted eight hits in the first game, three of which came from B. Smith. She was 3-4, scored two runs and drove in two with her fifth home run of the season. Kelly Leos was 2-3 with an RBI. Pitcher Lindsay Janssen (4-20) picked up her third Big West victory in her last four appearances. Janssen worked a complete game, and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and no walks. She struck out two.

In the second game, UCR scored one run in the first, three in the third and five in the fourth. USU's two runs came in the top of the fourth. Each team posted nine seven hits in the game.

Kristin Hommel (6-19) took the loss, as she allowed nine runs, five earned, on seven hits and six walks. Hommel also threw three wild pitches and struck out four. Catcher Amanda Carlson was 2-3 at the plate for the Aggies, as she scored a run and drove in one with an RBI double. USU's Leos, B. Smith, Stephanie Vasarhely, Casey Smith and Aimee Johnson each contributed a hit in the second game.

UCR shortstop Karli Burneleit was 4-5 on the day, with two home runs, three runs scored, five RBIs and a stolen base. Monique Baez (7-21) picked up the win for the Highlanders in the second game, as she allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks. She struck out two.

USU concludes its 2002 season with a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. at UC Riverside.
