Softball Ends Season With 10-Inning Win Over UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Utah State softball (12-44, 8-16) defeated UC Riverside (15-43, 5-17), 3-1 in 10 innings Saturday. The Aggies took two of their three games with UCR this weekend, as the teams split a doubleheader Friday. Saturday's game marks the end of the season for both Utah State and the Highlanders.

Senior catcher Breanne Smith provided the Aggies' only offense on the day and the only two extra-base hits in the game, as she hit her sixth home run and third triple on the season. Smith's home run in the top of the second put USU up 1-0, but UCR tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Smith's triple in the top of the 10th inning scored Heather Curtis and Stephanie Vasarhely and gave the Aggies the lead and the win. Smith was 2-3 with a run scored, three RBIs and two walks. Vasarhely and Aimee Johnson each were 1-4 for USU, as the Aggies posted four hits on the day.

Senior pitcher Kristin Hommel started the game, but left after the eighth inning and did not receive a decision. Hommel allowed one run on five hits, six bases on balls and three wild pitches. She struck out seven. Lindsay Janssen picked up the win for the Aggies, moving her record to 5-20 on the season. She faced eight batters and allowed one hit in 2.0 innings pitched. Janssen won four of the last five Big West games in which she appeared.

The Aggies won four of their last six Big West Conference games.
