Softball Defeats Cal Poly, 5-1, Saturday

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball (9-41, 5-14) beat Cal Poly (24-25, 7-12) Saturday at Johnson Field, 5-1. The win gives the Aggies a four-game home winning streak.

USU's Amanda Carlson hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot in the first inning, giving USU a 3-0 lead. It came with two outs after shortstop Heather Curtis doubled and Cal Poly pitcher Terra Blankenbecler intentionally walked Breanne Smith.

In the top of the second, the Mustangs' only run of the game came on Roni Sperry's RBI single that scored leftfielder Nicole Dansby. USU posted its final two runs of the day in the bottom of the second, as Marcie Neff and Kelly Leos each drove in a run.

Curtis was 2-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored for the Aggies. Leos also posted a double on the day, her fifth of the season. Pitcher Kristin Hommel (6-16) picked up the win, working her 14th complete game of the season. She pitched 7.0 innings, allowing one run on seven hits. Hommel struck out five. The Mustangs left eight on base, while the Aggies struggled defensively, committing four errors.

USU and Cal Poly conclude the Aggies' final home series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
