Softball Loses In Nine Innings At Utah, 3-2

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah State softball (10-43, 6-15) lost its final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at Utah, 3-2 in nine innings. The Utes' record moves to 27-33 on the season.

Utah scored two runs in the first inning, as Molly McLean hit a leadoff triple and Angie Kenney singled, but could not drive in McLean. First baseman Niki Hayhurst drove in both Kenney and McLean. The Aggies tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, as Heather Curtis and Breanne Smith both reached on singles and advanced on Amanda Carlson's ground out. With two out, Casey Smith drove in Curtis and B. Smith.

The Utes scored in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. Lyndsey Trevis walked to start off the inning, and Texie Criddle pinch ran for Trevis. Criddle advanced on a wild pitch, and Hayhurst, the next batter, walked. Both runners advanced on a second wild pitch in the inning, and USU's Kristin Hommel walked leftfielder Traci Keller to load the bases. Michele Larsen hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield, scoring Criddle, and giving Utah the 3-2 win.

Hommel (6-18) worked 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and 10 bases on balls. She threw three wild pitches and struck out eight. Curtis was 2-4 for USU with a run scored, while C. Smith was 2-4 with USU's only extra-base hit of the game. Marnie Andrews was also 2-4 for the Aggies.

The Aggies stranded seven, while Utah left 14 runners on base. USU turned its 12th double play of the season.

USU concludes its season with a three-game Big West series Friday-Saturday, May 11-12 at UC Riverside. Friday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., while Saturday's single game starts at 1 p.m.
