LOGAN, Utah - Freshman Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) recorded a team-high 18 kills and 13 digs to lead Utah State to a dramatic five-game win over Rhode Island by scores of 26-30, 26-30, 30-25, 30-23, 17-15 at the 2002 Rhode Island Classic. With the win, the Aggies have now won its last four matches and improved to 5-3 on the season. With the loss, the Rams dropped to 1-7.
Utah State got off to a slow start in the match and fell behind two games to none before rallying to win the final three games and notch the win. Rhode Island hit .306 in the opening game and .216 in game two before the Aggie defense stiffened and held the Rams to just a .050 hitting percentage in game four and a .161 hitting percentage in game five.
Individually for Utah State, Zuzana Cernianska hit .400 in the match with those 18 kills, while her sister Tereza Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) hit .405 with 17 kills to go along with nine digs. Junior Erin Cartwright (Hyrum, Utah) added 14 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Jenna Jordan (Plant City, Fla.) hit a team-high .545 with eight kills. As a team, Utah State hit .256 for the match and held Rhode Island to a .192 hitting percentage.
Utah State will play its third and final match of the 2002 Rhode Island Classic on Saturday afternoon against Baylor University.
