Volleyball Drops Five-Game Match To Baylor

LOGAN, Utah - Despite four players recording double-digits in kills for Utah State, led by junior Erin Cartwright's (Hyrum, Utah) 19, the Aggies women's volleyball team lost a five-game match to Baylor by scores of 30-24, 31-33, 30-24, 28-30, 7-15 to fall to 5-4 on the season. Baylor, who improved to 6-3 with the win, won the 2002 Rhode Island Classic with a 3-0 record.

Both teams had a productive game one as USU hit .368 and Baylor hit .361 as the Aggies recorded the six-point win. The Bears evened the match at one game apiece after hitting .342 in the second game and limiting the Aggies to a .227 hitting percentage. Utah State rebounded in game three and hit .526 to go up two games to one. The fourth game was much like the second as both teams hit for a high percentage before the Bears posted the two-point win. The fifth and final game of the match was all Baylor as the Bears hit .500 to just .313 for USU.

Individually for Utah State, Cartwright hit .500 in the match with her team-high 19 kills, while freshman Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) had 18 kills and hit .382 in the match. Junior Tereza Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) added 17 kills and eight digs, while senior Shauni Fluckiger (Hyrum, Utah) posted 15 kills. Senior Emily Kennedy (Arcadia, Calif.) led the USU defense with a team-high 16 digs.

Utah State will return to action on Thur., Sept. 19 as the Aggies open Big West Conference play at home against UC Irvine at 7:00 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Specturm.
