IRVINE, Calif. - Utah State's women's volleyball team picked up a big road win in Big West Volleyball Friday night with a four-game win at UC Irvine by scores of 30-17, 30-24, 20-30, and 30-28. With the win, USU improves to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in league play, while UCI falls to 16-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play with the loss.
Utah State jumped on UC Irvine early winning the first game 30-17 as USU hit .314 in the game and held the Anteaters to a negative .023 hitting percentage. The Aggies were even more explosive in the second game, hitting .500 with only three attack errors, while UCI hit .394. In game three, UC Irvine rebounded to notch the 10-point win as they hit .364 and held USU to a .146 hitting percentage. In the fourth and final game, Utah State hit .378 on 24 kills, while UCI hit .395 but had only 19 kills.
Sophomore opposite side hitter Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) led the Aggies with 23 kills and hit .500 in the match, while freshman outside hitter Beth Hodge (Broken Arrow, Okla.) added 17 kills and hit .342. Freshman opposite side hitter Mari Ruddick (Canyon Country, Calif.) added 12 kills and five blocks, while senior middle blocker Erin Cartwright-Davis (Hyrum, Utah) had 11 kills, 15 digs and five blocks.
As a team, Utah State hit a blistering .335 in the match, while UC Irvine hit .272. USU recorded 10 more kills (75-65), five more digs (60-55) and eight more team blocks (10-2) in the match.
Utah State returns to action Saturday night against Long Beach State at 8:35 p.m. (MST).
