LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) recorded a team-high 20 kills and 15 digs to lead Utah State's women's volleyball team to a four game win (30-28, 30-28, 27-30, 31-29) over Pacific here Thursday night. With the win, USU improves to 17-11 on the season and 9-8 in the Big West Conference, while the Tigers fall to 15-12 overall and 9-9 in league play with the loss.
"I thought we defended pretty well tonight and held our own against a very big blocking team," said USU head coach Burt Fuller. "It was kind of a sloppy match with two freshmen setters, but it was also a tough match although the numbers weren't very good."
Utah State hit just .159 in the opening game, but still held on for a two-point win despite letting a six-point lead midway through the game vanish. In game two, Pacific had a late three-point lead at 27-24, but the Aggies scored six of the final seven points including four straight kills from Cernianska to notch the two-point win. In game three, the Tigers rallied from a 24-26 deficit to score six of the final seven points to record the three-point win. In the fourth and final game, Utah State scored three of the final four points to record just its sixth victory in 32 meetings all-time against the Tigers.
Along with Cernianska's 20 kills and 15 digs, senior Erin Cartwright-Davis (Hyrum, Utah) added 18 kills, 11 digs and five blocks, while freshman Beth Hodge (Broken Arrow, Okla.) had 14 kills and 15 digs. Starting her first match of the season at setter, freshman Dominique Arsenault (Quebec City, Quebec) had 58 assists, 15 digs and four blocks, to go along with two kills.
As a team, Utah State hit .172 in the match, while Pacific hit .181. The Aggies did record nine more kills (72-63) and nine more digs (81-72), while the Tigers out-blocked USU 12.0-11.5.
Utah State will play its final home match of the season on Sat., Nov. 22 against Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
