SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Amanda Carlson hit a two-run homer as Utah State softball picked up a 10-4 win against Long Island after losing to seventh ranked California 5-1 here Friday. The Aggies are 3-16 this season.
In the day's first game, the Aggies fell to the California Golden Bears after giving up three runs in the seventh inning. Carlson and Quela Henderson picked up doubles and each went 1-3. Senior Stephanie Vasarhely ended her hitting slump, singling off a bunt in the fifth inning. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 26-6 on the season.
Utah State jumped out to an early lead against Long Island in the second game as Senior Marcie Neff scored off a sacrifice from Henderson. In the bottom of the second inning, a defensive lapse by the Aggies gave up four runs to the Blackbirds. The Aggies responded in the sixth, scoring six, giving Utah State a season-high 10 runs.
Carlson finished the day 3-5 with a home run, three RBI, three runs scored, a double and a walk. Leslie Higley picked up her third win of the season. Kelly Leos was 3-5 against LIU with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Aggies continue play at the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. Saturday as they play Eastern Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. and UNLV at 4 p.m.
