SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshman Sara Fleming posted her first collegiate home run as Utah State softball (5-16) beat UNLV 1-0. The Aggies defeated Eastern Kentucky, 6-2, in an earlier game here today. USU has won three straight games in the Capital Classic, marking Utah State's best performance in its three years in the classic.
Against Eastern Kentucky (11-8) in the first game, freshman pitcher Carli Baumgartner picked up her first collegiate win, giving up two runs and five hits. Utah State scored the first run of the game in the third inning as Casey Smith scored on a sacrifice fly from Marcie Neff. Smith's double, combined with two errors allowed Utah State to score five runs in the sixth inning. Smith was 2-2 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.
Freshman Leslie Higley picked up the second shutout of her collegiate career against UNLV (11-8) in the second game. Higley allowed four runs and struck out five. In the fourth inning, Fleming scored the only run of the game, hitting a home run. Fleming finished the day 2-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Quela Henderson led the Aggies at the plate, going 4-8 on the day with an RBI. Henderson and Neff each stole two bases.
The Aggies play their final game of the Capital Classic against host Sacramento State Sunday at noon.
