Softball Falls To UC Santa Barbara

LOGAN, Utah - Kelly Leos hit 3-3 in the second game, but Utah State softball dropped both games of a doubleheader to UC Santa Barbara, 8-1, 14-2 here Saturday. With the losses, USU dropped to 6-32, 1-10 on the season, while UCSB improved to 32-17, 7-6.

UCSB's Jamie Trinidad was the deciding factor in the first game. In the first inning, Trinidad hit a two-run homer to put the Gauchos up 2-0. In the second, Trinidad hit a grand slam to put UCSB up 8-0. The Aggies held the Gauchos at eight for the remaining five innings, but were only able to generate one run as Sara Fleming doubled, driving in Quela Henderson.

"We're pretty much in a rut," said USU head coach Debbie Bilbao. "With only two pitchers, everyone has to be on every day. And with young pitchers like we have, we need to give a lot of support offensively."

In the second game, USU came out strong offensively, scoring two runs in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Gauchos responded, scoring one run in both the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead. Then the Aggies gave up six runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth inning, as UCSB won, 14-2.

Quela Henderson was 1-4 with two walks and two runs scored. Leos finished the day 3-6 with an RBI. Candice Hatch went 2-5 on the day.

The Aggies play UC Santa Barbara in a single game Sunday at noon at Johnson Field in Logan, Utah.
