LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior offensive guard Trevor Hutton has been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is annually given to the nation's top collegiate interior offensive lineman.

Hutton, who started 10 games in his first season at USU last year, was named the Aggies' top offensive lineman and earned the team's most improved award after his junior season in 2002.

Aggie offensive line coach Jeff Hoover has been impressed with Hutton's transition from playing in run-oriented offenses before coming to USU and blocking in the pass-oriented Aggie attack.

"Trevor has always been a dominant run blocker and his biggest adjustment was in becoming a pass blocker," Hoover said. "After a full fall and spring practice, he is our best pass blocker."

Last year Hutton was credited with 38 knockdowns on the field, second on the team to Luis Trujillo.

The 6-1, 302-pounder, has excelled in the weight room as well. He owns the school reocrd squat with a 755-pound mark. His 505-pound bench press is tops on the team and he is the fastest offensive lineman on the team.

Hutton transferred from Hancock Junior College, where he earned second-team All-America honors in 2001. He was also ranked as the 32nd best junior college player in the country his sophomore season.

USU's Merlin Olsen won the prestigious award in 1961.

The Outland Trophy annually goes to the nation's top interior lineman - tackles, centers, guards on offense or defense are eligible - in college football. The Football Writers Association of America All-America Committee selects the winner with input from the membership. Presented since 1946, the Outland is the third oldest award in major college football behind the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award.

The award is named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn at the turn of the century. Dr. Outland established the award in 1946, a year before his death, with the help of the FWAA. He believed it was important for lineman to receive greater recognition.
