LOGAN, Utah - Shortstop Haven Vance went five of six with two home runs to lead Utah State in its double header against UC Riverside on Saturday. However, UC Riverside walked away with a pair of victories, 6-3 and 15-3.
With the losses, USU fell to 6-35 overall and 1-15 in the Big West, while UC RIverside improved to 13-40 and 4-13. The two teams will complete the series with a single game at USU's Johnson Field on Sunday beginning at noon.
Vance homered in both games, with a two-run shot in the first contest and a solo homerun in the second game. The Aggie shortstop accounted for four of the Aggies' six runs as she finished the day with five of the team's 17 hits.
In the first game, UC Riverside scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning before extending its lead to 6-0 with three more in the seventh. The Aggies rallied in the final inning as Amanda Carlson opened the final inning with a single before Vance hit her first homerun. Casey Smith followed with a double and scored two batters later on Quela Henderson's single before the rally was stopped.
In the second game, the teams entered the fifth inning tied at 3-3. However, the Highlanders scored three runs in the fifth inning before erupting for nine runs in the sixth inning. The game was called due to the run rule after the sixth.
