LOGAN, Utah - Lance Anderson has been named as the outside linebackers coach at Utah State University it was announced by Aggie head football coach Mick Dennehy on Friday. Anderson replaces David Reeves, who resigned to accept the head coaching position at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) College.
Anderson served as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Saint Mary's (Calif.) College in 2003. Last season the Gaels had four defensive players earn I-AA Independent honors as safety Weston Borba was a first-team selection, linebackers Ray Mike and Heath Villarreal were second-team picks and linebacker Anthony Woodards earned honorable mention recognition.
Prior to spending one season at Saint Mary's, Anderson worked four years at Bucknell with current Aggie defensive coordinator Dave Kotulski. He spent 2001 and 2002 as the school's defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator after working with the tight ends and offensive line in 1999 and 2000.
"The fact that Lance had worked previously with Dave, has a real good understanding of the postion he will coach, and is familiar with the defense we are running is huge in that Dave won't have to coach our coaches," Dennehy said. "This is a big plus this year."
While at St. Mary's, Anderson used the same defense he learned from Kotulski at Bucknell.
"I am real excited about working at Utah State and working with Coach Kotulski again," Anderson said. "He does such a great job with defenses and I am excited to be a part of it."
Anderson is familiar with the area as he was born and raised in Rupert, Idaho and his father wrestled and played football at Utah State. Anderson played high school football, basketball and track before walking on to the football team at Brigham Young University in 1989. After serving an LDS mission, he walked on at Idaho State in 1993 and 1994.
He graduated from ISU with a degree in biology in 1996. He and his wife Sherri have two children, Aubrey (5) and Jaren (3),
Anderson's previous coaching stops include Idaho State in 1997 and 1998 and the Mobile (Ala.) Admirals of the Regional Football League in 1999.
"We are very excited to have Lance for a variety of reasons," Dennehy said. "He is a great fit to our staff."
