LOGAN, Utah - Brent Guy has been named as the 25th head football coach at Utah State University it was announced by Aggie athletics director Randy Spetman on Friday.
Guy, a former Utah State assistant coach from 1992-94, has spent the last four seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arizona State. He replaces Mick Dennehy, who was fired after posting a 19-37 record in the last five years.
"Brent Guy has been involved in reviving some football programs that have become national-level programs in Boise State and Arizona State," Spetman said. "He was here when Utah State won a bowl game and he understands our situation here.
"He is a family man and a quality individual," Spetman added. "He cares about the welfare of the student-athletes and he puts academics first."
The 44-year old Guy's contract will be for five years and his compensation package will be worth approximately $300,000 per year.
Guy previously coached at Utah State from 1992-94, working with the linebackers under then head coach Charlie Weatherbie. In that time, the Aggies won the Big West Conference Championship and posted the only bowl victory in school history, winning the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl 42-33 against Ball State.
While at Utah State, Guy coached two-time first-team all-Big West Conference selection Jermaine Younger as well as David Gill, who would go on to be named all-league first team in 1995 and 1996.
"Obviously my family and I are excited to be able to live in Cache Valley," Guy said. "We liked living there so much our first time at Utah State and can't wait to return.
"I am excited about the opportunity to coach at Utah State at this time because there is a lot of excitement as we enter the Western Athletic Conference and build a new athletic complex," Guy added. "This will help us to become a competitive team and become a consistent winner, which is what we have to learn to be."
Arizona State went 8-3 this season and will play Purdue in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, marking its second bowl appearance in the last three years. The Sun Devils' defense enters the bowl season ranked 33rd in the NCAA in pass efficiency defense, 35th in rushing defense, 48th in total defense and 52nd in scoring defense.
In 2002, Guy's defense forced 40 turnovers, including 22 interceptions. Those totals ranked third and fourth in the country respectively. In addition, ASU recorded an incredible 123 tackles for loss, including 52 sacks that season.
As the defensive coordinator at Boise State from 1998-2000, he helped the Broncos become the cream of the league as BSU won the 1999 and 2000 league championships posting a 10-1 combined conference record in those two years. BSU then went on to win consecutive Humanitarian Bowls after those seasons.
Under his guidance, Boise State led the Big West in total defense, rushing defense, and scoring defense in both 1999 and 2000. In 1999, the Broncos ranked 28th in the nation in scoring defense allowing just 20.5 points per game.
Guy, who has been a part of nine bowl teams in his playing and coaching career, had two stints coaching at his alma mater of Oklahoma State. After serving as a graduate assistant (1986-87) and recruiting coordinator (1988) there, Guy coached the Cowboy linebackers from 1989-91 and then again from 1995-97.
Guy graduated from Oklahoma State with a degree in hotel and restaurant administration in 1983. He and his wife Shawn have two children, Madison and Riley.

Guy Note-able • Brent Guy has coached against Utah State five times in his career. While at Oklahoma State, the Cowboys beat USU in 1996. While at Boise State, the Broncos beat USU three times, and while at Arizona State, the Sun Devils defeated USU in 2003. • After being named an all-state running back at Booker (Texas) High School in the Texas panhandle, Guy walked on at Oklahoma State and lettered three seasons while starting at four different positions. • Boise State was 2-10 in 1996 and 4-7 in 1997 in the two years before Guy joined the staff. The Broncos were then a combined 26-10 in his three years there. • Helped Utah State to a 7-5 record in 1993 for its first winning season in 13 years. USU also recorded its only bowl victory that year. • In his second year at Arizona State, Guy helped the Sun Devils to an 8-6 record for ASU's first winning season in five years. • Played for Jimmy Johnson at Oklahoma State and assisted Pat Jones and Bob Simmons at Oklahoma State. Was an assistant for Charlie Weatherbie at Utah State. Was an assistant for Dirk Koetter at Boise State and Arizona State.
