Dec. 8, 2004
Utah State football player Kevin Robinson was named twice to The Sporting News Freshman All-America teams it was announced recently.
The 6-0, 188-pounder from Fresno, Calif., was tabbed as the second-team return specialist as well as a third-team wide receiver. A week ago, Robinson earned first-team all-Sun Belt Conference return specialist honors as well as second-team all-purpose accolades.
The national magazine recognized Ohio State's Ted Ginn as the top freshman return man in the country. Ginn led the country in punt returns with a 26.93 average with four touchdowns, while Robinson was second in the nation with a 22.47 average. Robinson also averaged 25.1 yards on kickoff returns and was one return shy of qualifying for the national rankings, where he would be listed 18th.
As a wide receiver, Robinson led the Aggies in catches and yards with 44 receptions for 602 yards. He recorded three 100-yard receiving games on the season.
First-team receivers included Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech and Dwayne Jarrett of USC. The second-team receivers were Austin Collie of BYU and Todd Blythe of Iowa State. Ernie Wheelwright of Minnesota joined Robinson on the third team.
Robinson's selection marked the second year in a row an Aggie was named to one of the nation's Freshman All-America teams as safety Terrance Washington was a second-team College Football News pick in 2003.
