Softball Team Loses Opener To Illinois State 9-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - Utah State's softball team opened its season losing 9-1 to Illinois State in five innings at Arizona State's Louisville Slugger Classic here Friday.

Utah State put together five hits in its first game against ISU, but managed just one run in the first inning as Kelly Leos knocked in Quela Henderson to give USU a 1-0 lead. Leos led the Aggies at the plate, going two of three. Henderson, Haven Vance and Jessica Garnett recorded USU's other hits.

Garnett, a freshman, was the starting pitcher and gave up four runs on two hits. She walked six batters and hit three in 2.1 innings.

The Aggies will play 19th-ranked Iowa and Wisconsin on Saturday before closing the tournament with a rematch against ASU on Sunday.
