Final Stats
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Purdue's Diana LaRiva threw the second no-hitter of her career as the Boilermakers defeated Utah State 4-0 on the second day of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament here Saturday. The Aggies later lost to host Sacramento State 4-2. And fell to 1-3 in the tournament and 3-17 on the season.
Sara Fleming hit a two-run homerun in the first inning to give USU a 2-0 advantage against Sacramento State in the later game, but the hosts responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. The Hornets then added a run in the third and another in the fifth to get the victory.
USU recorded six hits in the game, but could not muster any scoring chances after the first inning.
Against Purdue, only three Aggies reached base, all on walks. Jessica Garnett walked in the first inning, but became the third out when she was caught stealing. Haven Vance led off the fourth inning with a walk, but the Aggies followed that up with two pop-ups and a ground out to end the inning. In the sixth, Sara Fleming led off with a walk, but two strikeouts and a flyout ended any USU scoring chances.
Leslie Higley took the loss for USU as she allowed four runs on 11 hits. She did not walk anyone in the game.
Utah State will finish the tournament with a single game against Long Island on Sunday at noon mountain time. Long Island is 1-3 in the tournament after defeating Iowa Saturday night.
