LONG BEACH, Calif. - Utah State softball finished its weekend series against No. 22 Long Beach State with a 16-0 loss in Big West action here today. The game was called after the fifth inning.
The loss drops the Aggies to 7-27 overall and 3-3 in league play. The 49ers improved to 36-8 and 6-0.
LBSU scored seven runs in the first inning, and nine in the second en route to the victory. The Aggies meanwhile recorded just one hit, a double by Kelly Leos in the top of the fifth inning.
Long Beach State jumped on USU starting pitcher, Leslie Higley for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Colleen Burdick led off with a double, followed by a Lauren Johnson sacrifice bunt to advance Burdick to third base, Arleigh Thorp then connected for a double to plate both Burdick and Johnson for the quick 2-0 lead. Burdick eventually got to bat once more in the inning, and notched a double to score Kourtnee Gervasi (single) and Melanie McCauley (Fielder's Choice).
The 49ers added nine more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Burdick recorded two more RBI in the inning after her single plated Gervasi and McCauley. Jamie Farnworth also notched two RBIs in the inning after her single scored Johnson and Burdick.
Meredith Cervenka collected the victory for LBSU and improved her record to 16-3. Cervenka did not allow at hit and struck out four Aggies in 3.0 innings of work.
