Final Stats
PROVO, Utah - Utah State softball took BYU to extra innings, but the Cougars drove in a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to down the Aggies, 4-3 ,in the second game of the teams' doubleheader here Tuesday. BYU also defeated USU 5-1 in the opening game of the twinbill to stretch its current winning streak against the Aggies to 16 games.
USU has now dropped seven-straight games since opening Big West action with a 3-0 record. The two losses today drop USU's record to 7-29 overall and doesn't affect their 3-3 Big West record. BYU meanwhile, improved to 23-12 and stays at 3-3 in the Mountain West.
Utah State pulled together eight hits in its first game, but managed just one run in the sixth inning as Kelly Leos knocked in Jenna McCartney who was pinch running for Sara Fleming who reached on a single to center field. However, USU wouldn't get any closer than four as it stranded seven runners for the game.
USU's eight hits in game one came off the bats of Haven Vance, Quela Henderson, Fleming, Leos and Amanda Carlson. Five of USU's hits came from Fleming and Henderson, who tallied three and two, respectively.
In game two, the Aggies jumped on the board first with two runs in the second inning. The score would stay 2-0 until BYU exploded for three runs in the fourth to take the lead. USU tied the game with one run in the top of the sixth as Candice Hatch drove in Casey Smith, who opened the inning with a double down the left field line.
Hatch finished the game going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Smith also fared well against the Cougars, hitting 2-for-4 with two doubles. USU once again struggled to plate runners, leaving 10 Aggies stranded.
USU returns to Big West action this weekend as it hosts Cal State Northridge in a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
