OGDEN, Utah - Junior Hungsoon Park improved to 2-0 against Weber State this year and led Utah State's men's tennis team to a season sweep of the Wildcats with a 5-2 win here Thursday. USU defeated Weber 6-1 earlier in the season.
Utah State, which had failed to capture the doubles point in five out of its last six matches, came out strong with wins at the number one and two doubles spots to give itself the momentum heading into singles. Park and Jason Trask recorded the 8-5 win at the number one spot, while Hannes Schenk and Roshan Rasekhi teamed up at the two spot to capture the 9-7 triumph. Weber State avoided the sweep in doubles as the Wildcat tandem of Covington/Rideout, downed Tyler Bastian and Lucas Bouton 8-6.
USU looked even better in singles, picking up straight-set victories at the one through three positions. Park made quick work of Jonathan Engelbrecht, winning 6-4, 6-2. Schenk won his first match in three tries, defeating Zach Levetan, 6-1, 6-4. Trask continued to be a tough match at three as he improved to 8-3 at that spot in defeating Mathis Saberon, 6-2, 6-2. USU's final win in singles came with more of a struggle. Tyler Bastian dropped his first set to Weber's Andrew Corlett, 5-7, but then went on a tear recording a 6-0 win in the second set and capturing the match with a 6-2 third set.
USU's match against Weber was its last regular season match on the schedule, but the Aggies may play one more match against BYU in Logan next week. Check the USU men's tennis website at UtahStateAggies.com for forthcoming details.
If USU doesn't play BYU, its next match will be at the Big West Championships held in Indian Wells, Calif., on April 22-25.
