Softball Blanked In Series Finale With Cal State Northridge

LOGAN, Utah - Candice Hatch was 2-3 at the plate with her first double of the season in Utah State softball's 7-0 home loss to Cal State Northridge Sunday.

"We continue to have a tough time when we put people on base," said head coach Debbie Bilbao. "We had some good opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on them."

USU has now dropped 10-straight games since opening Big West action with a 3-0 record. The loss drops USU to 7-32 overall and 3-6 in the Big West. The Matadors meanwhile, improved to 24-14 and 5-4.

Northridge lead-off hitter Laura Hovestreydt opened the game with a home run to right center field and the Matadors never looked back in cruising to the 7-0 triumph.

CSUN tallied one more run in the third, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure the win. Matador pitcher Erin Sigala picked-up here second complete game shutout of the Aggies in the series to improve to 9-2 on the season.

Leslie Higley took the loss for the Aggies, moving her record to 5-15 on the year. She worked 6.0 innings, allowed eight hits and walked two. Jill Bruins allowed just one hit in her 1.0 inning of releif. She walked two.

While Hatch was 2-3 at the plate, two Aggies - Jessica Garnett and Amanda Carlson - scattered the other USU hits on the day.

USU continues its current seven game homestand with a single game against Utah on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. USU lost to the Utes 4-2 earlier this year.
