LOGAN, Utah - USU got home runs from Casey Smith, Sara Fleming and Kelly Leos on the day, but it wasn't enough as the Aggie softball team dropped its doubleheader to Southern Utah here Wednesday by scores of 9-6 and 7-2, respectively. The two losses give the Thunderbirds the four-game season sweep of the Aggies, as the two teams met for a doubleheader in Cedar City previously this year.

With the win, SUU improves to 25-12, while the Aggies fell to 7-24.

The Thunderbirds got on the board first as they notched a run in the top of the first inning. USU then tied things up in the bottom of the second as Fleming led off the inning with her second home run of the season.

SUU would eventually go up 6-1 as they scored two in the third inning and three in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies would get back on the board when SUU walked Quela Henderson with the bases loaded. Smith then recorded USU's second run of the inning as she out ran a shot to third that scored Michell Vlahos.

The Thunderbirds took their biggest lead of the game at 9-3 in the top of the sixth, when Jentry Johnson singled to left and was subsequently brought home when the next batter, Bobbi Jo Merrill, homered. Not to be out done, Jessica Heineman followed Merrill with her first home run of the season.

The Aggies looked to mount a comeback in their last at-bat as Smith knocked a three-run home run to pull the Aggies within three. But following Smith's home run, USU put just one runner on base as their seventh inning heroics came to an end. Smith finished the game with four RBIs for USU.

Leslie Higley picked-up the loss for the Aggies, as she went six and two-third innings and gave up seven runs on 12 hits.

In the second game, with the score tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Aggies' hopes of avoiding the sweep seemed to get washed away in a half-hour ran delay that came as USU was threatening. The ran delay came as Jessica Garnett was batting with Michell Vlahos on base, who reached as a result of being hit by a pitch.

After the ran delay the Thunderbirds recorded two-straight outs to dampen the Aggie threat, and it was all SUU from then on. The Thunderbirds recorded five runs in the top of the sixth that put the game out of reach. USU added one run in the bottom of the sixth as Leos smacked her first dinger of the year to deep center field. But that would be all USU's offense would get, with the Thunderbirds cruising to the 7-2 triumph.

The Aggies finished game two recording four hits, as Vlahos, Haven Vance and Amanda Carlson joined Leos in the hit column.
