Final Stats
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman right fielder Lauren Guzman was 2-3 with an RBI in USU softball's 8-2 loss to UC Santa Barbara in game one of the teams' doubleheader here Saturday. USU mustered just one hit in game two, falling to the Gauchos 2-0.
The two losses Saturday extend USU's losing streak to 15 games as it fell to 7-37 overall and 3-11 in the Big West. Santa Barbara, meanwhile, improved to 27-26 and 9-4.
Game one proved to be all Gauchos as they opened up with a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. The first inning charge was lead by UCSB pitcher Lindsey Herrin, who hit a record tying three-run home run off Leslie Higley. The home run was Herrin's ninth of the season, tying UCSB's single season record.
The Aggies came within two after they plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning, capped by a Lauren Guzman RBI single to center field that scored Jessica Garnett.
Santa Barbara added four more runs in the sixth, including freshman Kendra Singley's seventh home run of the season, to give the game its final 8-2 score. The loss in the circle dropped Higley's record to 5-18 on the season.
The second half of the twinbill belonged all to UCSB pitcher Jennifer Davis as she struck out a team season-high 16 batters en route to her sixth shutout victory of the season, improving her record to 11-13. Davis gave up just one hit to the Aggies, a Haven Vance single that squirted through the left side of the infield.
The Gauchos picked up one run in the first inning and added another in the bottom of the sixth to tally the triumph.
Despite giving up just four hits in game two, the Aggies' Jessica Garnett suffered the loss and falls to 0-17 on the year.
The teams conclude their three-game conference series with a single game tomorrow at noon at UCSB's Campus Diamond.
