RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Utah State's softball team snapped a 17-game losing streak and started its own modest two-game winning streak this weekend at UC Riverside.
The Aggies dropped the first game of a Friday double-header with the Highlanders 6-3 before responding with an 8-3 victory in the nightcap and adding a 5-2 win on Saturday.
USU erupted for four runs in the second inning and added three more in the fourth en route to its 8-3 win. USU pounded out a season-high 13 hits, including a four-of-four day by Casey Smith. Leslie Higley went the distance, allowing just six hits as she improved her record to 6-19 on the year.
On Saturday, Higley recorded another win as she scattered seven hits in another complete game as USU pounded out 10 hits. The Aggies plated five runs in the first two innings before UC Riverside scored two in the fourth. Quela Henderson, Jessica Garnett and Michell Vlahos, all had two hits in the final game of the series.
Utah State improved to 9-40 on the season and 5-13 in the Big West. The Aggies had not won a game since sweeping a three-game series to open league play against Cal State Fullerton, April 2 and 3. UC Riverside fell to 13-47 and 3-15 in the Big West.
The Aggies will close out their season with a three-game series against Cal Poly at Logan, May 14-15. The teams will play a double-header on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. and finish with a single game on Saturday at noon. Admission to home games is free.
