Utah State dropped to 1-2 on the season as the Aggies suffered a 48-6 loss at the hands of 15th-ranked Utah here Saturday afternoon. Utah improved to 3-0 on the season, while recording its second straight road win.
The Utes scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and added three more in the second to take a 41-0 lead into the lockerroom. Utah ran up 301 yards of total offense in the first half before finishing the game with 441 yards. The Aggies were limited to 104 yards at the break finished with 295.
USU's lone score of the game came on an eight-yard touchown pass from Travis Cox to Tarrell Richards with 7:07 remaining in the third quarter. The Aggies drove 55 yards in seven plays to get the score. The play was Richards' first career catch and came in the first game he has played at USU.
Aggie quarterback Travis Cox was 17 of 28 passing for 163 yards and threw a touchdown pass for the 14th time in his 15 career starts. However, he also threw two first-half interceptions as well.
USU rushed for just 48 yards on 35 carries while passing for 247 yards as Leon Jackson III and Matt Crivello split playing time at quarterback beginning in the middle of the third quarter.
Wide receiver Kevin Robinson continued to play well and after catching five passes in each of the first two games, the freshman hauled in seven balls for 70 yards on Saturday.
Defensively Andre Bala, who earned his first collegiate start in place of the injured Terrance Washington at free safety, responded with a game-best 10 tackles. Linebacker Jared Johnstun added eight stops, including a sack, while Jarrett Bush recorded his first career interception and had two passes broken up.
Utah State will travel to UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 25 for a game that will televised back to the state of Utah on UPN at 8 p.m. mountain time.
