TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Travis Cox completed 16 of 27 passes for 162 yards and threw two touchdown passes, but Alabama mounted 460 yards of total offense to down Utah State, 48-17 here Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.
Alabama got on the board first in the opening quarter with a 28-yard field goal by Brian Bostick. The Crimson Tide would make it 10-0 as quarterback Brodie Croyle connected with Clint Johnston for a 19-yard touchdown reception.
Utah State stayed right with Alabama in the first quarter as Cox connected with Kevin Robinson for a 35-yard touchdown reception. The touchdown reception was the first of Robinson's career.
Ben Chaet's career-long field goal of 44 yards with 0:01 remaining in the half pulled the Aggies to within seven, 17-10, going into halftime.
Alabama then opened the second half by scoring the next 17 points in the game before a 21-yard pass from Cox to freshman tailback Chris Forbes put the Aggies back on the board, 34-17.
Utah State wouldn't score the rest of the game and Alabama scored two more touchdowns to down the Aggies, 48-17. The 48 points given up by the Aggies were the most given up in a season opener since allowing 49 points at Arizona to open the 1992 season.
Alabama had two 100-yard rushers as Kenneth Darby and Ray Hudson both ran for 111 yards. Quarterback Brodie Croyle finished the night completing 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards and two touchdown passes.
Utah State's ground attack was lead by Forbes' 28 yards on 11 carries. Robinson led all Utah State receivers with five receptions for 58 yards.
Utah State returns to Logan for its home opener against Idaho on Sat., Sept. 11 at 6:05 p.m. (MST)
