SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junior Charity Weston scored her fourth goal of the season to go along with her fourth assist, but a 3-0 deficit proved too much for Utah State to overcome at it fell at San Jose State, 4-2, on Friday night in a Western Athletic Conference soccer match.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for USU as it fell to 4-7-3 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. The Spartans, on the other hand, picked-up just their second win of the season, moving to 2-10-2 and 2-1.
"San Jose really took it to us in the first half," said head coach Heather Cairns. "We weren't sharp and fell behind early. In the second half we made the necessary adjustments, but our play in the first half cost us the game."
Liz Behlen gave SJSU an early 1-0 lead as she scored an unassisted goal in the 14th minute. The Spartans then went up 2-0 on Kristin Krale's second goal of the season. Brittny Beshore played a cross from the right side that Krale was able to knock past USU keeper Kelli Allred.
The Aggies were out-shot 6-3 in the opening 45 minutes as they went into the intermission down 2-0.
"We need to learn how to play attacking soccer for 90 minutes," Cairns said. "When you are playing a conference opponent you can't let your guard down and that's what happened in the first half."
USU was the aggressor in the second half as it recorded 15 shots to SJSU's 7. Despite the increase in aggression, USU found itself down 3-0 in the 50th minute as a Jackie Cruz shot from 20-yards out found the back of the net.
Weston's fourth goal of the season put the Aggies on the board at 57:47, while sophomore Abby Hunt scored her first goal of the season, USU's final of the night, at 88:03. Lacey Christenson was credited with the assist on Weston's goal, while Weston and Sierra Smith recorded assists on Hunt's goal.
For the game, USU out-shot the Spartans 18-13 and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Weston led the Aggies with four shots, while Rachelle Dixon and Dana Peart each had three.
Kelli Allred allowed all four of San Jose State's goals as she was replaced by Lisa Willardson at the 68:12 mark. Allred recorded USU's only save, while the Spartans' Adreinne Herbst stopped six shots in going the distance.
