USU To Host San Jose State For Homecoming
QUICKLY -- Utah State (1-2 overall, 0-1 WAC) returns to Romney Stadium to face San Jose State (1-3, 0-1) in its 76th annual homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 8... Kickoff is slated for 1:07 p.m. with the game being televised in the state of Utah on KJZZ... USU has a modest two-game home winning streak having defeated New Mexico State last year and UNLV this season... Saturday's game is just USU's fourth home game in its last 12 contests... USU has not lost consecutive games in its last five outings... The Aggies will be looking for their first ever WAC win after losing at Idaho last week.
ON THE AIR -- All Utah State football games are carried on the Aggie Radio Network with "Barnacle" Al Lewis calling the play-by-play and Ken "I do not know the way to San Jose" Beazer providing analysis this week. The game will be televised in the state of Utah on KJZZ.
RADIO SHOW ON CAMPUS -- The weekly Brent Guy radio show, which is sponsored by Fazoli's Restaurant, hosted by Al Lewis and broadcast on KVNU 610 AM in Logan each Thursday from 6-6:45 p.m., will be held at different locations on campus this season in an effort to get the students more involved in the program. Fazoli's will provide an entree for $2 at each location. On Thurs., Oct. 6, the show will be held on the terrace of the Taggart Student Center. The public is invited.
RECOGNIZING THE 11 -- Utah State's football team is wearing decals to recognize the 11 individuals from the College of Agriculture that were involved in a tragic van accident on Monday, Sept. 26. Eight students and one instructor were killed in the accident. The logo is a yellow block letter 'A' inside a blue circle and is worn on the back right of the helmet.
HOMECOMING-- Utah State will play its 76th homecoming game against San Jose State. The Aggies are 47-26-2 all-time in front of the Alumns, but have lost each of their last two such contests. San Jose State has been the homecoming opponent four times and USU is just 1-3 against the Spartans in those games.
LAST TIME OUT -- Leon Jackson III passed for 157 yards and ran for 74 yards, but threw three interceptions in USU's 27-13 loss at Idaho. Idaho struck first taking a 14-0 advantage into the lockerroom before USU rallied with consecutive third quarter touchdowns by Kevin Robinson and Chris Forbes. Robinson's 10-yard reception pulled USU within 14-7. After Marquise Charles recorded his first career interception, the Aggies scored on a 51-yard run by Chris Forbes on the next play to pull within 14-13. An extra point that appeared good, was called no good and USU trailed 14-13 with 2:31 left in the third quarter. Idaho then kicked consecutive field goals to pull ahead 20-13 with 2:38 remaining in the game. USU started its next drive at its own 20-yard line and Jackson connected on four straight passes to get the Aggies to the Idaho 40-yard line. After a dropped pass and a Jackson six-yard run to the Idaho 34, Jackson was picked off by Mike Anderson, who returned the ball 71 yards for the game's final score.
UP NEXT -- USU will travel to Fresno State on Oct. 15 for a kickoff at 8:05 p.m. mountain time. The game is the first in a stretch that has the Aggies at Fresno State, home against Boise State and at Alabama.
COACH Brent Guy -- Brent Guy (Oklahoma State, 1983) is in his first year as a head coach after coming to Utah State from Arizona State where he was the defensive coordinator for four years. Guy was an assistant coach (linebackers) at Utah State from 1992-94 under then head coach Charlie Weatherbie. During that time, USU posted its only bowl victory in school history, claiming the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl. Guy has been involved in eight bowl games in 19 years as a collegiate assistant coach. Previous stops include Oklahoma State (1986-91 - graduate assistant 1986-87, recruiting coordinator 1988, linebackers 1989-91), Utah State (1992-94 - linebackers), Oklahoma State (1995-97 - linebackers), Boise State (1998-2000 - defensive coordinator) and Arizona State (2001-04 - defensive coordinator) before being named the Aggies' 25th head coach in December of 2004.

USU-SAN JOSE STATE SERIES -- San Jose State leads the all-time series by a 17-9-1 count, including a 9-3-1 advantage in games played in Logan. The teams have not met since 1995, but the Spartans have won eight straight meetings dating back to 1986. USU's last win in the series was 35-32 in Logan in 1985. The teams first met in 1940 and SJSU won the first five matchups. From 1962-85, USU was 9-4-1 against the Spartans before SJSU went on its current streak.
USU-SJSU LAST TIME -- Joe Furlow's 42-yard field goal with :18 left gave San Jose State a 32-30 win against Utah State on Sept. 30, 1995. SJSU led 17-6 before the Aggies scored 14 straight points to lead 20-17 at halftime. USU upped its advantage to 27-17 early in the third quarter. With USU leading 30-23 late in the game, SJSU scored on a 70-yard pass to pull within 30-29 with 2:26 left. After holding USU, SJSU took possession on its own 48 with :57 left in the game. SJSU associate athletics director John Glass worked at Utah State prior to going to SJSU... USU TE coach Danilo Robinson set the USU single-game sacks (5) and tackles for loss (6) record against San Jose State in 1995.
USU VS. THE WAC -- Utah State is in its first year as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. While it is its first season as a member of the league, the Aggies own a 71-65-3 all-time record against schools currently in the conference. USU's 17 losses to San Jose State are its most against any league school. SEVENTEEN FRESHMEN HAVE SEEN ACTION -- Seventeen different freshmen have played this season, including five that have earned starts. Here is a look (starters marked with an *): Offense - TB Ryan Bohm*, OT Derek Hoke*, FB Lynwood Johnson*, WR Otis Nelson, OL Ryan Tonnemacher, QB Jerod Walker Defense - DL Ben Calderwood, CB Marquise Charles*, LB Daryl Fields, LB Devon Hall*, LB Bevan Howard, LB Jake Hutton*, S Cameron Luke, LB Clay Swan, S Caleb Taylor Special Teams - Rob Myers, Bryan Perkinson
RUSHING LEADERS -- Through three games, USU's leading rusher each week has been a player other than a running back. In the season opener QB Leon Jackson ran for a team-best 87 yards, while TB Ryan Bohm rushed for 56 yards. Against UNLV, WR Kevin Robinson had three carries for 29 yards while Bohm had 21 yards. Last week at Idaho, Jackson went for 74 yards on the ground, while Chris Forbes led the running backs with 59 yards.
RUSHING LEADERS TWO -- It is early, but QB Leon Jackson III leads the team in rushing with 149 yards on the ground (TB Ryan Bohm is second with 85 yards) and no quarterback has led USU in rushing in a season (statistics available back to 1957). The school record for yards rushing in a season by a quarterback is 273 by Ron Edwards in 1964 and Jackson needs just 125 yards in the team's next eight games to surpass that mark.
OPP. QUARTERBACKS ON TARGET IN USU'S LOSSES -- The opposing quarterback has had great success in USU's two losses this season. In the season opener at Utah, Ute quarterback Brian Johnson hit 18 of 21 attempts for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Against Idaho, the Vandals' Steven Wichman was 20 of 25 for 238 yards and one touchdown. In those two losses for the Aggies, the opposing starting quarterbacks were a combined 38 of 46 for 506 yards. In USU's win against UNLV Rebel quarterback Shane Steichen was 25 of 43 for 265 yards and two scores.
PENNYMAN MAKING A DIFFERENCE -- Junior WR Tony Pennyman missed the first game of the year due to a suspension, but in the two games he has been back he has made a difference. Against UNLV, he earned WAC special teams player of the week honors after returning two kickoffs for 133 yards, including a 92-yard return for a touchdown. In that game he also pulled in a career best 10 receptions for 97 yards and another score. Against Idaho on Saturday, Pennyman had a team-best seven receptions for 89 yards with the team's longest reception of the year at 26 yards. He leads the team with 17 catches for 186 yards, while the next two receivers (Ryan Bohm and Kevin Robinson) have combined for 15 catches for 121 yards.
FIELD POSITION WOES -- Utah State has had a problem with field position through three games. In the first three games, the Aggies have averaged starting at their own 26 against Utah, 38 against UNLV and 25 against Idaho. Meanwhile Utah started at its own 37, UNLV at its 34 and Idaho its 39. The opponents have started 13 drives on USU's side of the 50, but have scored on just seven of those 14 drives. Of the nine drives the opponent has started at its own 20 or in, they have scored just one field goal. On the other hand, USU has started just two drives on the opponents' side of the field and scored both times (one touchdown and one field goal).
WHAT A WALKON - Freshman walkon LB Jake Hutton has gotten his Aggie career off on a good start. He has started all three games and is second on the team in tackles with 24 (Terrance Washington leads with 26), second in tackles for loss (four) and he is leading the team in forced fumbles (two). Hutton leads the WAC in fumbles forced, averaging 0.67 per game, a figure that ranks seventh in the NCAA, and is 10th in the league in tackles per game at 8.0.
