Softball Falls To Arizona State 11-2 Sunday

TEMPE, Ariz. - Michell Vlahos smacked her second home run of the season to give Utah State an early 2-1 lead, but the Aggies were unable to hold on as Arizona State exploded for 10 runs in the final two innings Sunday to record an 11-2 win in the final day of the Kajikawa Tournament hosted by ASU.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 2-4 on the year, while ASU improved to 5-0.

ASU pulled ahead early with one run in the first, but in the top of the third with one runner on, Vlahos, took ASU starting pitcher Desiree Serrano's (2-0) first pitch over the left field fence for the 2-1 lead. The Aggies were unable to hold onto the lead when the Sun Devils exploded in the sixth and seventh innings cruising to victory with 10 runs. USU managed just five hits, while the Sun Devils scattered 11 on the day.

Leslie Higley, who started the game for USU, pitched five innings giving up six hits and three earned runs. This was her first loss of the season taking her win/loss record to 1-1. Four USU players, Roxanne Ritchie, Amy Schaible, Candice Hatch and Vlahos recorded hits against Arizona State. Vlahos finished the day going two-for-two from the plate with two RBI and one home run. Arizona State was helped by four errors by the Aggies.

Up next for Utah State is the Aggie Classic Tournament hosted by Texas A&M on Feb 18-21. The Aggies open the tournament with two games on Friday as they face Northwestern at 12:15 p.m. and Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m.
