Final Stats
Cedar City, Utah - Utah State showed the various weapons at their disposal when they defeated SUU in a back and forth pitcher's duel the first game and racked up the runs in a slugfest in the second. Winning both games allowed the Aggies to come within three games of .500 with a 5-8 record on the season.
In the first game, Leslie Higley evened up her season at 3-3, allowing only four hits, striking out three batters, and recording the first Aggie' shutout of the season. The shutout was the fourth of her career. Quela Henderson-Leonhardt showed her extreme batting power in the top of the third, knocking the ball out of the field for a three run home run. SUU tried to come back in the sixth, stringing together two hits to allow the Thunderbirds a chance to tie up the game, but Heather Straight came on to the mound and with the help of a line-out double play, recorded the first save of her career.
Four USU players,Quela Henderson-Leonhardt, Amy Schaible, Shawn Bjarnson, and Michelle Vlahos, recorded hits during the first game. USU recorded six hits to SUU's four.
As the first game was all about the pitching, the second game of the doubleheader was all about power. The Aggies scored the second most runs of the season, steamrolling to a 9-5 victory over SUU. Southern Utah started early, scoring two runs in the first and following up with two more in the third. Behind by four runs the Aggies gritted their teeth and put their bats into action. With three people on base, Kelly Leos doubled to right center, sending Amy Schiable and Amanda Carver home safe. One more run was scord in the fourth and the Aggies put the game away in the sixth exploding for six runs and their second victory of the day. Three Aggies hit doubles Leonhardt, Carver, and Leos (2) and Sara Fleming showed her power knocking the ball hard into right field for a triple, sending two more Aggies in to score.
Seven Aggies, Quela Henderson-Leonhardt, Jessica Garnett, Sara Fleming, Amy Schaible, Amanda Carver, Kelly Leos, and Michell Vlahos, recorded hits on the day. The Aggies had 11 hits on the day and allowed SUU to record 13.
