Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Utah State's softball team lost both games of its doubleheader with Cal Poly here Friday. The Aggies were defeated 5-3 in the first game and were shut out 2-0 in the next game.

In the first game Amy Schaible hit the first home run of her career to send Utah State ahead 2-0 in the second inning. Schaible was perfect in the game, going 2-2 at the plate with two RBI and one run on top of her homerun. The Mustangs tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, but Cal Poly's Robyn Kontra gave the Aggies a go-ahead run in the sixth by walking Roxanne Ritchie with the bases loaded.

The Wolverines came from behind in the bottom of the sixth when Jackie Gehrke-Jones reached on an Aggie fielding error for three go ahead runs to make the score 5-3 and win the game. The Aggies finished with seven hits in the game.

The second game was all about Cal Poly's Eva Nelson. She pitched a perfect game striking out eight Aggie batters along the way. It is the only perfect game pitched by a Cal Poly pitcher since 1998 when Desarie Knipfer had her perfect game in a 5-0 win against Toledo, where she struck-out 18 of 21 hitters. Leslie Higley tried valiantly to keep Utah State in the game and allowed only eight hits and two runs in six innings.

Six Aggies, Leonhardt, Fleming, Garnett, Ritchie, Amy Schaible, and Amanda Carver, recorded hits in the first game. The two losses drop Utah State to 7-15 on the season and 1-4 in the Big West.

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a final contest on Saturday at noon.
