Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Utah State's softball team dropped a 2-0 decision at Cal Poly on Saturday to complete a three-game series with the Mustangs. USU lost all three games and fell to 7-16 overall and 1-5 in the Big West Conference. Cal Poly improved to 21-10 and 6-0.

Saturday's game was eerily similar to the perfect game pitched by Cal Poly's Eva Nelson in the Friday nightcap as the Aggie offense struggled from the plate. Once again an Aggie pitcher, in this case Jessica Garnett, took the weight of the game on her shoulders.

Only by limiting the Cal Poly offense would Utah State be able to stay in the game. Garnett showed great determination and held the Mustangs to four hits and two runs, but the Aggies came up short in the end. Cal Poly scored early in the first and again in the fourth to take a two run lead into the seventh.

Utah State had failed to connect with the ball the entire game until pinch hitter Heather Haak singled up the middle in the seventh and gave Aggies a brief sense of hope. This hope was short lived, as the Aggies were unable to get another hit and the game ended with Cal Poly winning its third game in two days.

Including Friday's game, Cal Poly pitched 14 consecutive innings without allowing an Aggie hit. Haak was the only Aggie to record a hit in the last two games.

The Aggies will host instate rival Utah for a single game on Wednesday.
