Final Stats
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Utah State's softball team defeated Utah on the road Wednesday afternoon by the final score of 6-1. The win was USU's fourth in its last six games as they improved to 11-23 on the season, matching their win total from last season. The Utes, on the other hand, dropped to 12-20 overall.
Leslie Higley improved to 7-10 as she pitched the entire game, allowing just seven hits and one earned run. She tied her single-game strikeout record with five.
Utah State took an early lead in the game after scoring one run on an error in the top of the first. The Aggies continued to pad their lead in the second as Utah's pitcher, Brianna Gourdin, allowed Amy Carver to score when she hit Sara Fleming with a pitch. Gourdin then proceeded to walk the next USU batter and allow another Aggie run. Quela Leonhardt finished up the second inning by crushing a long double into left centerfield for three RBI to bring the score to 6-0.
Utah foiled an Aggie shutout in the sixth inning when Ivette Hernandez doubled into right center field to bring second baseman Jackie Wong home. Two Aggies recorded hits including Leonhardt, who went two-for-four at the plate with three RBI and a double. Candice Hatch also recorded a hit as USU recorded three hits to Utah's seven.
Utah State will face its second Mountain West Conference opponent in as many days as Colorado State travels to Logan on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
