LOGAN, Utah - Freshman Lacey Christenson and junior Charity Weston helped Utah State soccer break a 10-match winless streak with a 3-1 win against San Francisco on Thursday. The win was the first of the year for the Aggies as they improved to 1-4-2. San Francisco fell to 1-6 with the loss.
"It was nice to get a win today after we have been so close this year," said head coach Heather Cairns. "We had some very special performances today, especially by Lacey and Charity."
USU's three goals were just one shy of its season total (3) coming into Thursday match.
The Dons drew first blood as they wasted little time getting on the board with a goal just over three minutes into the match. Lindsea Swisher took a pass from Stephanie Gray at the top of the 18-yard box, dribbled twice and was able to beat Kelli Allred.
With USU sitting at 0-4 on the season when allowing its opponents to score first, the Aggies needed to answer fast. At the 8:09 mark a free kick by Jessica Darrow was flipped into the middle of the box by Christenson and Weston booted her first goal of the season to tie the score at one apiece.
The goal was the first scored by USU in the first half this season. USU kept the pressure on the Dons in the first half and had a 13-3 advantage in shots. The pressure paid off as Christenson once again found Weston on the right side of the box and Weston placed a shot on the far post for the game-winner.
The back-and-forth action of the first half didn't carry over into the second 45 minutes as both teams struggled to mount a substantial attack.
In the 83rd minute USU was able to put together a run and a scramble in the 18-yard box put the ball at Christenson's feet. She beat one defender and laced the ball past a lunging USF goal for the final goal of the afternoon.
The goal and two assists are the first points of Christenson's career. Darrow's assist was also a career first, while Weston now has five career goals.
Allred picked-up her first career win in net as she tallied three saves. Katie Hodgson garnered the loss for the Dons, allowing all three goals and recording four saves.
Utah State is back in action on Sat., Sept. 17 as it host border-rival Idaho State at 1 p.m.
