Utah State's men's tennis team beat the Nevada Wolfpack 6-1 here on Friday at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. The Aggies are now 5-4 on the spring season with the win.
In singles action the Aggies won five of their six matches with Johannes Zelle defeating Tibor Penzes at the No. 1 spot 6-3, 6-1. The Aggies had two tie-breakers at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots resulting in a win for Utah State. At the No. 2 spot Joao Pinho defeated Guillaume Tonelli 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, with and at the No. 4 spot Dantley Young defeated Rafal Stupka 2-5, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles the Aggies won two of their three matches as Pinho and Zelle took the No. 1 spot defeating Guillaume Tonelli and Eldar Dzhafaron 9-8 (8-6). At the No. 2 spot Young and Jonas Tyden defeated Nevada's Penzes and Randy Reynolds 8-5.
"Our team played very well, but I didn't think we would end with the score that we did with Nevada being such a good team," said USU head coach Christian Wright. "I am proud of the team's determination to get another win."
The Aggies will be in action again on Feb. 22 in Logan against Mesa State. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
