SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After starting the Capital Classic with a win on Friday, Utah State's softball team ended the tournament with a 1-3 record as it lost to host Sacramento State 5-0 here on Sunday. The Aggies fall to 4-18 overall with the loss.
Utah State started the game with two-out walks by Sara Fleming and Quela Leonhardt in the first inning, but were unable to move the runners past second base. That was the closest the Aggies would come to scoring as they would only manage one runner to reach base the rest of the game.
Sacramento State's pitcher Cassie Cervantes (4-3) picked up the win as she no-hit the Aggies, striking out 15 and walking three in seven innings. Cervantes set Utah State down in order in five of the seven innings.
Senior Heather Straight took the loss (4-4) as she went four and one-third innings, allowing four earned runs, and striking out two. Freshman Lindsey Benson came on in relief as she did not allow a earned run in one and two-thirds innings, and struck out two.
Straight was also named to the all-tournament team as she went 1-1 in the Capital Classic where she struck out seven, walked two, and gave up only six earned runs in 11 and one-third innings.
