Volleyball Loses To 11th-Ranked Hawai'i In Three Games

LOGAN, Utah - Amanda Nielson recorded a match-high 16 kills for Utah State, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies lost to 11th-ranked Hawai'i in three games (30-27, 30-17, 30-22) here Monday night. Hawai'i improved to 16-3 on the season and 10-0 in the Western Athletic Conference with the win, while USU falls to 9-10 overall and 6-4 in league play with the loss.

Nielson, a senior opposite side hitter from West Valley City, Utah added nine digs to go along with her 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh (Sandy, Utah) had eight kills and seven digs.

Aneli Cubi-Otineur led Hawai'i with 16 kills and nine digs, while Jamie Houston added 14 kills and seven digs.

Houston led Hawai'i with six kills in the opening game as the Rainbow Wahine hit .176 (16-10-34) to notch the three-point win. USU was led by Nielson's four kills in the opening game as it hit .093 (14-10-43) as a team. In game two, Cubi-Otineur had seven kills and Houston added six as the Rainbow Wahine hit .421 (19-3-38) and coasted to the 13-point win. Nielson recorded 10 of USU's 16 kills in game three, but the Aggies were unable to extend the match as it lost by eight points. In the third and final game, USU hit .217 (16-4-46) as compared to a .295 (17-4-44) hitting percentage for Hawai'i.

Utah State finished the match by hitting .100 (39-26-130), while Hawai'i hit .302 (52-17-116). The Rainbow Wahine also had 13 more digs (52-39) and 10 more assists (48-38), while USU had 3.5 more team blocks (12.5-9.0).

Utah State will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Idaho (9-10, 5-3) at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
