RENO, Nev. - Freshman forward Lauren Hansen scored her fifth goal on the season and junior forward Candice Clark found the back of the net for the second time this season as Utah State soccer shutout Nevada, 2-0, Friday evening in Reno, Nev.
The win moves the Aggies to a 6-9-0 overall record and 2-1-0 record in the WAC, while Nevada falls to 4-8-1 on the season and stays winless in WAC conference posting an 0-3-0 mark. USU is now 5-3 all-time against the Wolf Pack and have shutout Nevada, 2-0, for two straight years.
"We were going against the wind in the first half and Candice did a great job setting up Lauren," said Utah State head coach Heather Cairns. "It was great to see our forwards have such an effect on the game, not only in the scoring column but they did a great job of being targets for us and holding on to the ball."
Hansen netted the game-winning goal early on as Clark kicked a through ball to Hansen take the Aggies' up 1-0 in the sixth minute of action. Hansen has now scored a goal in the last two Fridays.
Sophomore forward Alysa Adams fought a Nevada player for the rebound off a corner kick by sophomore defender Jessica Williams. Adams connected with Clark for the second goal of the match in the 85th minute. The goal is Clark's fifth career goal.
Junior goalkeeper Ali Griffin earned her fifth shutout of the season as she tallied one save to keep the Aggies' in the match. Nevada's netminder Marie Cove recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Sophomore forward Alysa Adams stepped in to play at defense when Lindsey Smart received 10 stitches after colliding with a Nevada player.
"We stayed incredibly organized defensively and Ali made a big defensive play in the first few minutes of the game to earn the shutout tonight," Cairns said. "All of four of our back defenders were great and Alysa Adams stepped in for Lindsey Smart and played a great game for us."
Nevada had the 7-5 shot advantage, while Utah State had the 4-1 shots on goal edge.
The Aggies continue conference action on the road as they head to Fresno State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
