OGDEN, Utah - Utah State's Amanda Nielson continued her impressive play Tuesday night as she recorded a season-high 31 kills and a career-high 22 digs to lead Utah State's volleyball team to a five-game win (30-19, 30-24, 27-30, 28-30, 15-8) against Weber State.
Utah State improves to 12-10 on the season with the win, while Weber State falls to 9-11 overall with the loss. USU has now won 10 of its last 14 matches since starting the season with a 2-6 record.
Nielson, a senior opposite side hitter from West Valley City, Utah (Granger HS) has now recorded at least 20 kills in each of her last three matches, as her 31 kills against Weber State were just one shy of her career-high. Her career-high 22 digs also marked her second straight double-double for USU.
Utah State also received an outstanding performance from junior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh (Sandy, Utah), who recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a career-high 22 digs in the match.
Kolbie Murphey led Weber State with 15 kills, while Micah Lines added 13 kills and 15 digs.
Utah State seemed to have the match in control after hitting a combined .143 (25-14-77) in the first two games and limiting Weber State to a .027 (21-19-74) hitting percentage to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Wildcats, however, responded by hitting .238 (14-4-42) in game three and .388 (20-1-49) in game four to force a fifth game. In game five, USU regrouped and hit .438 (8-1-16) to notch the five-game win.
As a team, Utah State hit .222 (71-30-185) in the match as compared to a .188 (61-27-181) hitting percentage for Weber State. USU also recorded 13 more digs (81-68), five more service aces (10-5) and three more team blocks (10-7).
Utah State will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 25 when it hosts Utah Valley at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
