LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer suffered it's third shutout of the season, falling to in-state rival Utah, 2-0, Saturday afternoon to wrap up non-conference action. USU falls to 4-8 on the season, while Utah improves to 8-2-2.
The Aggies fired three shots in the first four minutes of the match and all were saved by the Utes' netminder Lynzee Lee who made nine saves in the match. Junior goalkeeper Ali Griffin tallied six saves for USU.
After a scoreless first half, the Utes' Adele Letro netted the first goal of the match in the 47th minute of action, while Katy Reineke scored the second goal less than nine minutes later at the 54:28 mark.
"I think we got spooked when we had all those shots in the beginning of the match that didn't go in and we didn't respond mentally to that," said Utah State head coach Heather Cairns. "We didn't stay strong and positive and we didn't stay hopeful. We kind of hung our heads when it didn't go our way early on and that affected the rest of the game."
Utah outshot Utah State 15-12, while the Aggies had a 9-8 shots on goal edge along with an 8-5 shots ratio in the first half.
The Aggies kick-off Western Athletic Conference action on Friday, Oct. 12, traveling to Moscow, Idaho to tangle with Idaho at 4 p.m. (MT). USU then returns home on Sunday, Oct. 14, to host Boise State at Noon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
