LAS VEGAS, Nev. - UNLV played the role of rude hosts as the Rebels beat Utah State softball, 4-1, Monday in the Aggies' final action of UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at UNLV's Eller Media Stadium. USU went 1-4 at the Classic and the Aggies are now 3-6 overall, having lost five of their last six.
"The kids played well," USU head coach Candi Letts said. "We just left too many people on base. We need to do a better job of getting the clutch hit when we need it and drive in some runs."
USU left the bases loaded in the top of the first and left one runner on in each of the second, third, fifth and sixth innings, stranding a total of seven runners on the day.
The Rebels plated a run each inning in the first, second, fourth and fifth, to take a 4-0 lead before the Aggies scored a run in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore 1B Aubrie Stroman singled to left, and junior SS Tara Evans followed with a sac bunt to move Stroman to second. Senior UT Charity Weston then pinch-ran for Stroman, and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Freshman OF Emily Reilly plated Weston with a single up the middle.
USU was out-hit, 9-5, as no USU player had more than one hit. Stroman, Reilly, freshman 2B Nicole Rupp, senior OF Jamie Fife and senior C Jami Uragami all tallied base hits.
Freshman P Stacey Ellingsworth went five innings in the circle, spraying nine hits, while allowing four earned runs and logging four strikeouts. Senior P Lexy Perry threw one inning of no-hit, no-run ball.
Junior RF Whitnie Ray notched a stolen base in the second inning.
Utah State returns to action next weekend, joining host Southern Utah and fellow Beehive state for Utah Valley State in the Southern Utah Invitational Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 22-24.
