ST. GEORGE, Utah - Utah State softball split its two games Friday at the Southern Utah Invitational played at Dixie State College's Karl Brooks Field at St. George, Utah. The Aggies opened the day by beating Utah Valley State, 9-3, after rallying from a 3-0 deficit, and USU lost to Southern Utah for the second day in a row, 6-2.
With the loss, USU is now 4-8 on the year.
"We hit the ball well in the first game," USU head coach Candi Letts said. "I was proud of the girls for bouncing back after being down 3-0. In the second game, we just left too many people on base, and most of the things that they got were things that we gave them. We need to finish strong tomorrow."
In the win over UVSC, the Aggies blasted four home runs off the bats of junior 3B Amy Schaible, senior OF Jamie Fife, sophomore 1B Aubrie Stroman and freshman UT Nicole Rupp. It was Rupp's first HR of the season.
Sophomore Lindsey Benson got the win in the circle, improving to 3-1 on the year after her second winning decision in a row.
The double-round-robin Southern Utah Invitational was orginally scheduled for Cedar City, but was moved to St. George, Utah and will be held at the Karl Brooks Field on the campus of Dixie State College due to weather.
Utah State returns to the field on Saturday to again take on Utah Valley State at 11 a.m, before playing Southern Utah again at 1 p.m.
