SPOKANE, Wash. - Utah State senior Dana Peart continues her hot scoring streak as she netted the lone goal in the Aggies' 2-1 loss at Gonzaga Friday evening in Spokane, Wash. USU falls to 3-5 with the loss, while GU improves to 5-2.
"It took us a little while in the game to figure out how to attack and defend Gonzaga even though we had prepared for it all week," said Utah State head coach Heather Cairns. "We felt like we were under pressure in the first bit of the game but then we figured it out. They just had more shots and opportunities than we did."
Gonzaga took three shots in the first ten minutes of the match before finally scoring in the 42nd minute of action as Ashley Riley had a header from 15 yards out off an assist from Sarah Hall to score the first goal.
The Bulldogs netted a second goal as Jamie Blanche fought passed three defenders to net the ball in the far left corner to make Gonzaga's lead 2-0 after 75 minutes of action.
The Aggies responded back with a goal in the final five minutes of action as Peart hit the back right corner of the net from the left side off an assist by sophomore midfielder Alysa Adams.
Gonzaga had a 16-7 shot advantage, including 8-3 in the second half and 7-2 in shots on goal.
"We didn't think that we fought hard enough or played smart enough," said Cairns. "So really it's about bouncing back and being better for Eastern Washington."
Aggie junior goalkeeper Ali Griffin tallied four saves, while the Bulldogs Jessie Thalman recorded one.
USU continues action in Washington as the Aggies battle Eastern Washington on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Noon in Cheney.
